The old main Church in Bivona, dedicated to Santa Maria, was founded by a unknown feudatory in the 13th century and was enlarged and completed by Chiaramonte family in 14th century. It is a jewel of Sicilian Gothic. This church was divided by a nave and two side aisles with ten or twelve strong pillars and by a succession of ogival arches and cross vaults. The apse was poligonal and the bell tower, quadrangular in plan, was situated in north corner of the main facade. In the north wall there was an elegant portal from the second middle of the 13th century. The church, once rich in decorations, statues, paintings from the fifteenth century and the sixteenth century, with twelve altars, conserves only the portal.
THE GOTHIC PORTAL OF THE MAIN CHURCH IN BIVONA
This portal is the most important gothic monument in Bivona. In the high and austere facade there is the magnificent portal, in sandstone, surmounted by a big rose and by a blazon. It is the simbol of Chiaramonte power. Infact, the portal was built by Giovanni III Chiaramonte or Manfredi III Chiaramonte between 1363 and 1392.
The portal presents:
· Three ogival arches, delimitated by sticks, and three mouldings with zig zag bands, geometrics and naturalists ornaments.
· Six simple little columns supporting capitals ornate with foliage and, at the side of the columns, six files of diamond-shaped decoration.
· Three scenes (in keystones) which represent the Annunciation to the Virgin, the Virgin with Child, the God’s Lamb with Christ Judge.
From an architectural point of view this portal is an important example of fourteenth century Sicilian architecture, referred to precisely as the “Chiaramonte style”, which strongly reflects Islamic, Norman and Swabian experiences.
